What is BYOT?
BYOT stands for Bring Your Own Technology. It allows students and staff the options of bringing any wireless computing device to school to use on the district network. Sometimes, this is called BYOD or Bring Your Own Device.
1. You need more technology in your classrooms.
2. Technology is expensive. Even if we get everything we need, we'd need it all again in five years.
3. Schools and districts are looking for solutions that are good investments of limited funding.
Salem Pilot Program
Salem was one of seven Wake County schools (one of two middle schools) to be chosen. Tech Services determined our network was able to handle this program and that we have systems and structures already in place for a successful pilot. It will not necessarily be a school-wide pilot. More details will be forthcoming about who may be asked to pilot, but for now, think about whether or not this is something that you would consider for your classroom.
What We Know So Far
What to do Right Now
Nothing. Just think about it. If you are interested in learning more, here are a few articles and postings you could read.
This is coming. It's been coming for a long time. And we are getting in on the ground floor (at least for Wake). Have something to say about it? Questions? Want to know what others think? Join this padlet conversation.
We're going online with scheduling. The Media Center has purchased LARS - Lab and Resource Scheduler - an online reservation system. With your own personal account, you'll use this to reserve:
Access LARS at http://www.labandresourcescheduler.com -or- http://bit.ly/smslars -or- from the Teachers menu on the Media Center weebly site. You'll want to bookmark this resource.
We'll do a brief overview during the start of school meetings, but if you want to go ahead and get started sooner, you'll find what you need here: http://salemmsmedia.weebly.com/how-to.html You'll find a help sheet to download and two short tutorials that will help you navigate the site.
A few things to note:
This is a paid subscription we are trying out. Please give us your feedback - good and bad. We'll pass these along to the developers so they can make enhancements.
SIRS Decades is an online searchable database by ProQuest containing thousands of primary sources from the 20th Century. These include: letters, maps, political cartoons, speeches, and historical advertisements.
Language Arts and Social Studies teachers will definitely want to have a look at this resource, but it could be useful for RTI Enrichment planning, as well.
You can access at http://decades.sirs.com
No password required at school. Home access username is sirsdecades ; password is wake
As you begin to plan for next school year, some of you are looking to Discovery Ed (formerly United Streaming) for ideas. This will be a great resource for you and I can't wait to see what our Teacher Leader corps brings back. In the meantime, our subscription is up and active and you can have a look around. This could be helpful for your RTI planning, as well, if you are looking for video resources to share in centers or with your whole group.
Attached are the directions for how to access your teacher account.
